More Wall-to-Wall Star Wars
August 24, 2006

Last Spring, starwars.com announced the grand opening of ID-Wall.com’s official Star Wars wallcovering and canvas print website, which offers stunning Star Wars imagery in an expansive, finely-printed format. Well, the UK company has just revealed their second series of Star Wars deep frame Giclée canvas fine art prints, which include a brilliant portrayal of the Vader/Obi-Wan duel from A New Hope, cockpit views from a TIE fighter and AT-AT, snowspeeders, the probot on Hoth, Boba Fett, classic poster art and much more.Currently, ID-Wall is only able to distribute to pan-European countries, but tenacious U.S. collectors should be able to call in some favors from friends abroad to get their hands on one.

Make sure to check out ID-Wall’s second series prints, which are available for pre-order to ship in September, as well as their well-received Series 1 set now available at their official site.

Ever wish you could own your own little corner of the Star Wars galaxy? Well, with a new product line recently launched by UK licensee ID-Wall.com, European fans can now step into the world of Star Wars by simply opening their bedroom door. ID-Wall.com currently offers wall-size murals of your favorite Star Wars landscapes and locales, reproduced in stunning high-resolution images that can effectively transport your room to a galaxy far, far away.(Currently, ID-Wall only carries a license to distribute to pan-European countries, so for the time being, U.S. fans will have to admire from afar.)

While many fans have made do with scattered photographs and posters to define their Star Wars space, a full wall-size covering that displays the twin suns of Tatooine, a Coruscant cityscape, or the Death Star trench run can fully immerse the viewer into their Star Wars happy place. The larger-than-life graphics command any space, whether it’s a bedroom, collectibles den, or home theater. Some innovative fans might even enhance their wall coverings with creative lighting effects they install onto, and perhaps into, the wall.

Coruscant Cityscape

Make no mistake — these aren’t the tacky, fuzzy-focused postcard landscape wallpapers of the ’70s. According to ID-Wall.com’s founder and managing director, Tim Bennett, the Star Wars wall coverings utilize technology much more sophisticated than that of decades past. This technology includes a process used by company myfotowall®, for which ID-Wall is a licensed reseller. “The myfotowall® process has taken away all of the complicated technical aspects associated with both the pre- and post-production of a photo-based wall covering,” explains Bennett. “In doing so, we are able to utilize additional software that enables us to resample the original files to a maximum of 1600% with no discernable loss in the printable quality. Even this functionality has quality control built into the website, via a zoom bar, that never lets the user resize their image beyond these limits. We also print using a process that does not use a traditional dot structure, therefore giving the visual impression of a resolution far higher than you may expect.”

Fans are invited to check out ID-Wall’s Star Wars website, where three of the samples shown on the “Examples” page are already available to custom tailor to their wall space (more of the sample images will soon be added to the product gallery). Just want part of the Coruscant cityscape to cover your wall? No problem — you can adjust the image to whatever portion you’d like to display on your wall, zooming in or out to whatever distance you’d like.

“Our online selection, visualization and order process means large graphic wall images have now become more accessible than ever before and to a wider audience than ever before,” continues Bennett. “Being an internet-based company, the ability to utilize the myfotowall® functionality allows this creative and cost-effective process to be used by anyone who has a wall, a digital image, and five minutes to spare!”

While ID-Wall will enlarge personal photos for wall covering display in addition to their licensed selection of Star Wars images, they currently cannot print fan-submitted Star Wars imagery. “We will only print official Star Wars prints from our galleries that have been fully endorsed and signed off by the Lucasfilm team in the U.S.,” says Bennett. “We see a lot of unofficial Star Wars pop-art available, especially on the web. We want to ensure that fans and our consumers get the real deal. This helps protect the Star Wars brand integrity and value, and ensures that it will continue to be successful for many years to come.”

According to the website, the images are printed onto a wipe-able, non-moisture absorbent paper substrate, and divided into sections measuring about 500mm (19.6″) wide. This allows for easier application, although they suggest using a professional decorator to do the actual installation.

Twin Sunset of Tatooine Print

In addition to the wall coverings, ID-Wall is also offering a limited edition series of fine art Giclée Star Wars Prints on canvas.

“Our canvas prints went live last week with the site launch,” enthuses Bennett. “Series 1 features 19 images available in a variety of sizes in four main collections; Jedi & Rebels, Planets & Places, Ships & Droids and Sith & Imperials. Initial take up for the prints has been great from both fans and trade accounts. All the prints come with an official certificate of authenticity and are hand-numbered.”

Each of the 19 canvas prints is limited to between 150 and 375 pieces, and again is currently available only to European consumers. Time for U.S. fans to call in some favors from friends overseas!

Bennett is excited about the future of Star Wars wall coverings and canvas prints offered by his company. “We will continue to develop the range of images available both in canvas print and photo wall covering format,” he explains. “We expect to see the launch of two further series for both lines this year. The images in our Special Editions will only be available in limited numbers from 150 to 500 units. This will help drive the collectability of the canvas prints; each series will feature around 25 images compared to around six for photo wall coverings.”
